When people look at a successful business, they often see the finished picture. They see the contracts, employees, uniforms, equipment, customers and accomplishments. What they do not always see is the struggle behind it all.
Building Shelton's Janitorial has taken years of hard work, patience, sacrifice, faith and determination. There have been more times than I can count when we heard “no.” We have submitted bids we did not win, worked long days and late nights, and faced unexpected expenses at the worst possible time.
There have been nights when I sat at the table calculating everything down to the exact dollar, determined to make sure payroll and the business's responsibilities were covered. Sometimes the amount that came in was almost exactly what we needed—and not a dollar more. Somehow, we kept moving forward.
The responsibility behind owning a business.
Owning a business is not just collecting payments and celebrating new contracts. It is carrying the responsibility of the people who depend on you. It is making sure employees are paid, customers are taken care of, supplies are available, insurance stays active, and every location receives the service it was promised.
It means answering calls after hours, solving problems when plans fall apart, filling in when someone cannot work, and learning from every mistake. It means continuing to show up even when you are exhausted, discouraged or unsure of what the next week will bring.
One job and one opportunity at a time.
Shelton's Janitorial did not become what it is overnight. We started small and continued growing one customer, one job and one opportunity at a time. Along the way, we expanded from residential cleaning into commercial janitorial work, government projects, construction cleanup, Airbnb turnovers, military housing, banks, offices and other facilities throughout Northern California.
Every accomplishment came with challenges behind it.
There were doors that closed, but another one eventually opened.
There were moments when quitting may have seemed easier, but giving up was never the plan. Each difficult season taught us something about leadership, responsibility, patience and the value of having people around us who believe in what we are building.
Why I am sharing the struggle.
I do not share this story because I want sympathy. I share it because success is not always a straight line. Small-business owners struggle. We worry, make sacrifices, learn difficult lessons and sometimes wonder how everything will come together. Then we get up the next morning and keep working.
I am proud of how far Shelton's Janitorial has come, but I am also proud of what it took to get here. The struggle has made us stronger, more experienced and more grateful for every customer, employee, referral and opportunity we receive.
We are still growing. We are still learning. We are still working through challenges. But we are also still standing—and we are not finished yet.
