Eco-Friendly Cleaning: What It Actually Means (And What to Ask For)

“Eco-friendly” gets thrown around a lot. Here's what it actually means in the cleaning industry, which products are genuinely safer, and how to request it from your cleaning company.

What “eco-friendly cleaning” actually means

In the cleaning industry, “eco-friendly” generally means using products that are non-toxic, biodegradable, and plant-based — as opposed to conventional cleaning products that contain harsh chemicals like ammonia, bleach, phthalates, or synthetic fragrances.

The goal is to clean effectively while reducing exposure to chemicals that can irritate skin, trigger allergies or asthma, harm pets, or leave residues that aren't great for kids crawling on floors.

Who benefits most from eco-friendly cleaning?

  • Families with young children or babies — kids touch everything and put things in their mouths
  • Pet owners — pets walk on floors, lick surfaces, and are more sensitive to chemical residues
  • People with allergies or asthma — synthetic fragrances and harsh chemicals can trigger reactions
  • Anyone who prefers fewer chemicals in their home — it's a personal preference, and it's valid

What to look for in eco-friendly products

Not all “green” labels are equal. Here are the certifications and terms that actually mean something:

  • EPA Safer Choice — products that meet EPA safety standards for human health and the environment
  • Green Seal certified — independent certification for cleaning products
  • Plant-based / biodegradable — breaks down naturally without leaving harmful residues
  • Fragrance-free or naturally scented — no synthetic fragrances (a common irritant)
  • No ammonia, no bleach, no phthalates — the big three to avoid

Does eco-friendly cleaning cost more?

Usually a little. Eco-friendly products cost more than conventional ones, so most cleaning companies charge a small surcharge — typically $10–$15 for a standard clean or $20–$30 (10–15%) for a deep clean or larger home. It's not a huge difference, and for families with kids, pets, or sensitivities, it's worth it.

How to request eco-friendly cleaning

The key is to ask before your first service — not day-of. Eco-friendly products need to be prepped and brought to your home. Most companies (including us) are happy to accommodate, but we need advance notice so we can stock the right products.

Just tell us:

  1. You want eco-friendly / non-toxic products
  2. Any specific sensitivities (fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, etc.)
  3. Whether you want it for the whole house or just certain areas

We also use HEPA-filter vacuums

In addition to eco-friendly products, we use HEPA-filter vacuums that capture 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns — including dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and mold spores. This makes a real difference for allergy and asthma sufferers.
